Here’s What They’re Saying
Before you read any further, join our private Facebook group and get daily doses of inspiration from our community. After you request to join, be sure you come back and read how to open your IT bands and Deltoids to free your guards.
Dear Guarded One,
I’m your IT Bands that run on the outside of your thighs and your deltoids that cover the outer edge of your arms. We have the same purpose, to armor you from the outer world. We’re super tight, strong and rigid, like steel. We do a good job but need a break from standing at attention. Therefore, we’d like to take a rest, soften up, and let down our guard.
When you keep us on duty 24/7, even while you sleep, we get tired. As a result, we’ll yank on your knees, hips or shoulders to get your attention to give us a break. When we can soften up and rest, we can go back to work and be a more attentive guard. Responding when we need to respond rather than being too exhausted and overworked to react.
We’ve been standing guard for too long.
In addition, we’d like a bit of appreciation. We’re so ignored and never admired or loved on, like the guard dog that is kept outside all the time and rarely petted. Stop and pet us. Tell us what a great job we’re doing. We’ll reward you with healthy knees, hips and shoulders.
Attennnnntion!
Your Deltoids and IT Bands
Lessons from a Hurricane
I began to hear the rumor that Hurricane Lane was approaching the Big Island of Hawaii where I was living. As a result, I watched my weather apps continuously searching for clues of what the hurricane was about to do. The apps showed the storm coming close to Hawaii and the news reported impending doom. But, I felt optimistic that Lane wasn’t going to hit us. Most hurricanes don’t come close to the Hawaiian Islands.
As the days crept by, the hurricane’s path came closer and closer to the Islands. The news went out that ships wouldn’t be bringing supplies to the Hawaiian Islands for several days due to the track of the storm. Because of that, I decided I’d better do at least a bit of hurricane prep. I went to the store, bought a few things I might need, extra batteries for my flashlights, candles, water and food.
The Storm Hits
I was ready. Therefore, I relaxed and watched as Lane came close to the Hilo side of the Big Island. We escaped a direct hit but the outer bands reached us and brought rain. It rained and rained and rained. The said the hurricane bands got stuck in our mountains and as a result, in twenty-four hours my area of South Hilo had 17 inches of rain. In three days it was still raining and the gauges showed 50 inches.
As the storm pounded us with rain, I began to hear something else…What was it? When a lull came I went outside and saw a flowing river where normally there was the green grass of the 14th hole and 15th tee of the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. The river was complete with rapids and waterfalls. I found that Fascinating. We experience rain in Hilo all the time but never this amount in such a short period of time. I’d never seen a river in the middle of the golf course before.
Matching The Inside With The Outside
My curious mind began to connect the newly opened water channels brought by the hurricane to what happens inside my body. I have areas of my body that I hardly ever pay attention to, my IT bands that run on the outside of my thighs and my deltoids that run on the outside of my arms. I rarely work on them but when I do, they gift me with huge rushes of energy flowing through my body, just like the water running through the dry terrain outside my back door.
Hmmmm? I thought, maybe I need to create my own internal storm to push me to open these tight areas, to allow the energy to flow, to give these muscles a break from their continuous contraction.
I got the balls out and rolled on these tight, dry feeling muscles and it hurt. They weren’t used to being paid attention to, much less released. As I came off the balls and laid back, I felt an amazing amount of energy flowing. I could see an energy river flowing where there wasn’t one moments before. I kept practicing and my body was enjoying the flow. It brought a freshness to the trapped, stagnant space of my deltoids and IT bands. I felt free.
As I ended my practice, I glanced out my back door and watched the newly formed river outside match my newfound river inside and thought how powerful mother nature is and what an amazing teacher she can be.
